Micasa App Redesign: Event Discovery and Host Collaboration

Redesigned event platform with simplified discovery and automated payment splitting for hosts

Built by 1 person (Team 16) · July 2025 · Micasa Hackathon, 2025/06

What it does

The team redesigned the Micasa app to help users discover and manage local events with less friction. The new interface combines a scrollable feed with map-based exploration, letting users browse events by proximity or category using visual tags like #comedy or #popupdinner. For event hosts, the redesign introduces automated payment splitting among collaborators. Hosts can assign DJs, chefs, or co-hosts a percentage of ticket sales or fixed fees. The system distributes revenue automatically and handles tax reporting, replacing manual payment chains.

How we built it

The team built a design system using Urbanist for body text and Instrument Serif for headers and metrics. They applied glassmorphism overlays to maintain readability over images and used a neutral color palette of white, light grey, and black with selective orange-brown accents. The design includes modular bento-box layouts for event management and simplified onboarding with visual preference tags. They proposed integrating Stripe Connect Express Accounts for collaborator payments, which allow revenue distribution without requiring business credentials and handle 1099 tax reporting automatically.

Impact

The redesign addresses friction in event discovery and a core pain point for hosts who previously had no easy way to split payments among multiple contributors. College students, local creatives, and event collaborators such as DJs and chefs benefit from streamlined browsing and automated revenue sharing that builds trust among co-hosts.

Questions and answers

How does the payment splitting work for event hosts?

Hosts assign collaborators a percentage or fixed fee during event creation. Stripe Connect distributes revenue automatically to collaborators' accounts. If a collaborator hasn't completed onboarding, their earnings wait in a pending wallet until they do. Stripe handles year-end 1099 tax reporting.

What changes were made to event discovery?

The Home tab combines a scrollable feed with map-based exploration. Users browse by proximity or category using visual tags. Glassmorphism overlays maintain readability over images, and a dynamic tag system encourages browsing similar to social media.

What was updated in the design system?

The team replaced the previous cartoon-style interface with Urbanist body text and Instrument Serif headers. They used a neutral palette of white, light grey, and black with orange-brown accents, rounded edges throughout, and glassmorphism for image-based layouts.
