Transform NY STEP: Design Your Student Challenge

“Traditional STEM lessons fail to engage underrepresented students—how will you spark their curiosity?”

The Challenge

New York's Science and Technology Entry Program (NY STEP) serves thousands of underrepresented students, but many instructors find it challenging to create engaging, project-based learning experiences that connect classroom theory to real-world applications. Traditional lesson plans often fail to capture students' imagination or demonstrate the practical value of STEM education, leading to disengagement and missed opportunities for skill development. This challenge presents a unique opportunity for NY STEP instructors to revolutionize their approach to student engagement. Using GenHax's platform, you'll experience firsthand how modern challenge-based learning works—from participant discovery to mentor interactions, skill validation, and progress reporting. You'll then apply these insights to design or refine a challenge specifically tailored to your students' needs and your program's objectives. We're asking you to step into your students' shoes first, then emerge as a challenge architect. Create a compelling, real-world challenge that will captivate your NY STEP students while meeting educational standards. Test your approach by inviting fellow instructors to experience your challenge, gather feedback, and refine your design. The goal is to develop a proven, engaging learning experience that you can confidently implement in your program.

About This Challenge

## Overview The New York Science and Technology Entry Program (NY STEP) has a powerful mission: to increase the number of historically underrepresented and economically disadvantaged students who are prepared to enter college and pursue careers in STEM fields. However, many dedicated STEP instructors face a common challenge—how to transform traditional classroom learning into engaging, real-world experiences that truly prepare students for future success. This challenge is designed specifically for NY STEP instructors who want to revolutionize their approach to student engagement using challenge-based learning. You'll experience the GenHax platform from multiple perspectives—as a participant, mentor, and challenge creator—while developing a custom learning experience for your own students. ## Background Traditional STEM education often struggles with the "why does this matter?" question that students frequently ask. NY STEP programs serve students who need to see clear connections between their studies and future opportunities, yet many instructors lack the tools and frameworks to create these meaningful connections effectively. Challenge-based learning has emerged as a powerful pedagogical approach that addresses this gap by: - Presenting real-world problems that require STEM knowledge to solve - Encouraging collaborative problem-solving and critical thinking - Providing mentorship and guidance throughout the learning process - Validating skills through practical application rather than traditional testing - Creating opportunities for students to showcase their work and build confidence GenHax's platform provides the infrastructure to implement this approach effectively, but success depends on well-designed challenges that resonate with students and align with program objectives. ## What We're Looking For Phase 1: Experience the Platform (Week 1) First, you'll engage with the GenHax platform as a participant would: - Explore available challenges and select one that interests you - Participate in mentor calls and attend skill-building events - Complete skill validation exercises - Experience the full participant journey from discovery to completion Phase 2: Create Your Challenge (Week 2) Using insights from your participant experience: - Design or significantly update a challenge tailored to your NY STEP students - Ensure alignment with your program's learning objectives and standards - Incorporate opportunities for skill validation and mentorship - Develop clear success criteria and assessment methods Phase 3: Test and Refine (Week 2) - Invite at least one fellow NY STEP instructor or program manager to test your challenge - Gather detailed feedback on user experience, clarity, and engagement - Iterate on your challenge design based on feedback received - Document lessons learned and best practices discovered Phase 4: Present and Report (Week 3) - Pitch your refined challenge to other NY STEP instructors and program managers - Demonstrate the platform's reporting capabilities for tracking student progress - Share insights from your experience as both participant and creator - Provide recommendations for broader NY STEP program adoption ## Expected Outcomes By completing this challenge, NY STEP instructors will: Gain Platform Fluency: Develop comprehensive understanding of GenHax's capabilities from multiple user perspectives, enabling confident implementation with students. Create Engaging Content: Design a compelling, standards-aligned challenge that connects STEM learning to real-world applications relevant to your students' interests and career aspirations. Build Community: Establish connections with fellow NY STEP instructors, creating a network for ongoing collaboration and resource sharing. Develop Assessment Skills: Learn to use the platform's reporting and analytics features to track student engagement, skill development, and learning outcomes. Drive Program Innovation: Position yourself as a leader in modernizing NY STEP pedagogy, with concrete experience and materials to share with colleagues.
