Helio-KNOW: Heliophysics Data Exploration Platform

Interface for exploring heliophysics data through networks, tables, and timelines

· June 2024 · AI Knowledge

What it does

Helio-KNOW provides a user interface that allows researchers to explore heliophysics data in an intuitive way. The platform enables users to discover data through simplified navigation that progressively increases in complexity, explore data in different modalities including networks, tables, and timelines, and save queries for future work. The platform addresses the challenge that heliophysics researchers face when working with vast datasets. Despite having access to extensive data on solar variability and its impacts on Earth's magnetosphere and ionosphere, researchers struggle with diverse data formats and time-consuming synthesis work. The field lacks platforms for comprehensive data integration and analysis.

How we built it

The team built the solution using Neo4j for knowledge graph implementation and developed a Cypher query to add nodes and relationships from concept maps into the database. The team applied UX design to create an interface with model comparison capabilities and multiple data visualization modes.

Impact

The platform helps heliophysics researchers who struggle with diverse data formats and time-consuming data synthesis. It addresses obstacles in interdisciplinary collaboration such as differing terminologies and data sources, and reduces the learning curve for data science teams working with knowledge graphs and physics concepts. The solution simplifies complex space weather phenomena for diverse stakeholders.
