Geographical Mapping Integration for HBCU Research Networks

Interactive map visualizing HBCU research collaborations and institutional connections through OpenAlex data

Built by 6 people (TEAM 38) · September 2025 · AI Knowledge

What it does

This tool maps HBCU research activity geographically, showing connections between researchers, institutions, and topics. Users can upload a CSV file with names, institutions, and topics to populate a SPARQL query to OpenAlex. The system returns results with metadata and network graphs displayed on an interactive map. The application enriches faculty lists with data from OpenAlex, matching faculty names to their OpenAlex profiles and institutional affiliations. Faculty are categorized as matched or unmatched based on search results. The enriched data exports as CSV and JSON files, linking each faculty member to their respective OpenAlex profile.

How we built it

The team built a backend application using Python to query the OpenAlex API. The code reads faculty names from an Excel file, searches OpenAlex for each name, and adds information like OpenAlex ID and affiliation when matches are found. Results populate an interactive map with a landing page and an endpoint holding query results. The work includes CSV file upload functionality and outputs enriched data in both CSV and JSON formats.

Impact

The tool addresses the CollabNext challenge to identify researchers working on specific topics and their institutional affiliations, with an initial focus on HBCUs and emerging research institutions. It provides a familiar geographical context for visualizing research connections, making institutional collaboration patterns more accessible and discoverable.

Questions and answers

What data source does this tool use?

The tool queries OpenAlex, a research database, to retrieve researcher profiles, institutional affiliations, and publication metadata.

How do users interact with the map?

Users upload a CSV file containing faculty names, institutions, and topics. The system then populates a SPARQL query to OpenAlex and displays results on an interactive geographical map with network graphs.

What formats does the tool output?

The enriched faculty data is saved as both CSV and JSON files, with faculty categorized into matched and unmatched lists based on OpenAlex search results.
