About This Challenge

Our team has spent years mapping homeless shelter resources and the data pipelines that feed public directories, knowledge graphs, and service locators. We know where errors hide and where information goes stale. Now we want your help doing the work at scale. Participants will audit real shelter records: checking addresses, hours, capacity figures, eligibility rules, and contact details against ground-truth sources. You will flag outdated entries, document corrections, and propose updates in structured formats our team can act on directly. We will guide you through our verification methods, source hierarchy, and quality standards. You will learn how to assess conflicting sources, resolve ambiguity, and produce revision artifacts that meet a publishable bar. The output is a set of correction reports and updated records, reviewed and validated by our team. Every artifact you produce has a real downstream impact on people trying to find shelter.

Research Team

## Research Team This challenge would support multidisciplinary research teams working at the intersection of public health informatics, urban social services, and knowledge graph engineering. These teams typically operate within schools of public health, social work, or information science, often in collaboration with municipal data offices or nonprofit homelessness coalitions. The core expertise needed includes: - Data curation and knowledge representation: Researchers who build and maintain structured databases of social service resources, design ontologies for service eligibility and access, and develop quality assurance frameworks for community-contributed data. - Homelessness services research: Domain experts who understand shelter system operations, intake processes, regulatory requirements, and the information needs of both service providers and people experiencing homelessness. - Human computation and crowdsourcing: Methodologists experienced in decomposing verification tasks, training distributed contributor pools, and validating crowdsourced outputs against expert review. Participant contributions would directly feed the team's data quality pipeline. Validated corrections would be integrated into research knowledge graphs, shared with partner agencies running service locators (211 systems, municipal portals), and used to benchmark automated data quality tools. This work ultimately supports the team's broader mission: ensuring that people in crisis can reliably find the resources they need, when they need them.
